PRATT Safety System's comprehensive range of spill containment, spill response and facilities protection products ensures that we are able to provide our customers with a range of containment solutions to meet any need. Wherever chemicals are being stored and handled it is essential that all appropriate measures are in place for the containment of these chemicals in the event of an accidental spill or leak.
Spill containment is a method of controlling the spread of a liquid or other hazardous material by confining it within a barrier or drainage area. Preventing hazardous spills from contaminating the environment and minimising human exposure to hazardous materials. Effective spill containment is a critical component of workplace safety and environmental protection.
The method for containing a spill largely depends on several factors:
• The chemical or oil type involved.
• The size and type of the primary container.
• The machinery or storage facilities potentially involved in a spill.
• The typical use locations for the equipment and vehicles involved.
It is a key part of a broader spill response plan that integrates regulations from entities like Safe Work Australia and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) across various states and territories.
Also known as a bund, deck, or spill pallet. It is a secondary containment measure that creates a perimeter around, or under the stored liquids. This system captures any leaks or spills, enhancing safety and compliance.
The capacity of a bund is determined by the volume of liquid stored and the size & quantities of the containers stored.
There are some variations in the Australian Standards for the storage and handling of the various different classes of chemicals, but the rule of thumb applied is the bund must be large enough to contain the greater of (whichever is greater):
1. 110% of the single largest container on the bund or
2. 25% of the total stored on the bund
